Differences between assisted living, nursing homes, and Alzheimer’s care.
What is assisted living?
Assisted living is often viewed as the best of both worlds. Residents have as much independence as they want with the knowledge that personal care and support services are available if they need them. Assisted living communities are designed to provide residents with assistance with basic ADLs (activities of daily living) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, meals, housekeeping, medication assistance, laundry, and regular checks-ins. 24 hr awake staff ensures complete medical safety and offer medication assistance and/or reminders. Assisted living communities differ from nursing homes in that they don’t offer complex medical services.
What is Alzheimer’s care?
Caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease at home is a challenging task that can become overwhelming at times. Each day brings new demands and opportunities with changing levels of ability and new patterns of behavior.
Consider Monroe Manor’s specialized assisted living area. This area is separate from the assisted living area and apartments. It has entrance and exit doors only accessible through a code, ensuring residents are safe within their living environment. Safety, awareness and compassion for Alzheimer’s residents are key service aspects. We celebrate life at all levels and have designed an Alzheimer’s area that connects residents together through social interaction and allows them to safely enjoy an outdoor patio overlooking Quaderer’s creek. A community room with a large HDTV and fireplace can also be enjoyed by all Alzheimer residents. Staff almost always eat with residents and know residents personally. We believe this type of care provides benefit to the overall mental health of residents.

Understanding the concerns seniors face is important
According to a recent study commissioned by the Clarity and EAR Foundation, senior citizen’s greatest concerns are moving into a nursing home and losing their independence more than death. Boomers express particular concern about their parents' emotional and physical well-being should they have to enter a nursing home, finds the study, which examines the attitudes and anxieties of the nation's elderly population.
We at Monroe Manor understand the concern and uncertainty an individual may have when moving from home. Not only can it be difficult for the individual, but for the family members as well.
Whether you are personally considering moving into an apartment or assisted living, or are family members helping a loved one make a life changing decision, we are here to listen and help find the right solution for you and your family.
Moving into an assisted living situation is a significant life change, and we work to make it a positive one for our residents.
One of the greatest benefits of choosing Monroe Manor is our commitment to ensuring residents do not feel isolated or lonely. Our residents are able to live with old and new friends, eat healthy, home cooked meals, and stay in touch with friends and family through tools like e-mail and Skype. We deliver mail daily, and provide any assistance residents need reading or opening mail.
Area clergy make regular visits to Monroe Manor, providing social and spiritual comfort. In addition to spiritual services, activities include music and visits from school children, regular bible studies, more "treats" in life, all add to the personality and health of our residents.
We believe our residents also receive better medical care because the caretakers know them personally and can notice changes in health by having our Nurse Manager and staff work with the residents and their doctor.
Safety is a high priority at Monroe Manor. We are staffed 24-hours a day and make regular checks on residents. Three times every day we deliver snacks to them in their rooms. Their bathrooms and rooms are cleaned every day. This frequent contact ensures residents are never left alone for long periods.
It is our goal to understand individual wants and needs, to be sincere and to offer our best care. Independence when you want it and assistance when you need it. It is a choice and a decision and we offer our understanding, experience and time for you and your family.
